Only one chapter today – it’s quite a long one and I’m rather tired.
Mum pointed out that Willoughby at least has some aspects to his character that are endearing, unlike Mr Wickham, who is basically a charming snake. Willoughby is just weak, and we know that Austen cannot abide weakness of character, especially in men. Men like Mr Darcy and Colonel Brandon might not seem so dashing and exciting and spirited at first, but they prove to be the ones who endure with something of a more admiring and admirable affection.
If only they weren’t fictional, she said cynically (I know there are men of good character in the world…but nobody can live up to fictional heroes!).
